Ki-84 Special Attack Escort
Study this piece in greater detail:
Counter
By mid-1945, even the heroism of Japan's Special Attack Corps was being eclipsed by the unstoppable advance
of Allied forces in the Pacific.  Unlike earlier sorties from the Philippines, which wrought terrible losses upon
American shipping and personnel, later operations were conducted against an enemy who's tactics had been
adjusted to thwart the Kamikaze threat.  The japanese reacted by even more desperate measures, like sorties
flown at night and in poor weather as a means of avoiding interception by Allied aircraft.

In this image, obsolete Ki-27 fighter/trainers are being escorted through thunderstorms by a more experienced
and better equipped escort in a Ki-84 fighter. Destination: Okinawa.  It was not unusual for entire flights of aircraft
and airmen to become lost short of their targets and never be heard from again.  Some Special Attack pilots were
forced back to their bases (which was considered a great shame), only to repeat their missions later - up to six or
seven times before meeting their deaths.
