Ki-61 Hien, Burma 1943
Study this piece in greater detail:
The Japanese Imperial Army Ki-61 Hien fighter saw active service throughout the South
Pacific. In Burma, the type was considered impractical due to the climate and demands made
by the complexity of the aircraft in a typically crude and hostile environment.
Nevertheless, advancing British troops later came upon several Ki-61s as they overran their
airfields in 1945, and, as in this image, Allied bomber and fighter crews reported encountering
the fast and agile aircraft in theater.
